Understanding the Wuthering Waves Damage Formula
Maximizing your damage in Wuthering Waves isn't just about finding the item with the biggest ATK stat. The game uses a complex formula where different types of bonuses are multiplied together. Understanding this is the key to building powerful characters.
- 1Base Damage: This is your foundation, calculated from your Character's and Weapon's base ATK, multiplied by your total ATK%.
- 2Damage Bonus %: This is a big "bucket" where most damage bonuses get added together. This includes your Elemental DMG%, Resonance Skill DMG%, bonuses from Echo Sets, and most weapon passives. Stacking these is good, but they have diminishing returns with each other.
- 3Crit Multiplier: Your average damage increase from Critical Hits, based on your Crit Rate and Crit Damage. This is a separate multiplier, which is why Crit stats are so valuable.
- 4Amplify Multiplier: This is the secret sauce. Certain powerful abilities, like Verina's Outro Skill, provide an "Amplify" or "Deepen" buff. This is a final, separate multiplier that boosts your *total* damage, making it incredibly powerful.
Pro Tip: A balanced build that invests in all multiplier categories (ATK%, DMG%, Crit, and Amplify) will always outperform a build that focuses on just one.
What Are Resonance Chains & Are They Worth It?
A Resonance Chain (or Sequence) is a power-up system unlocked by obtaining duplicates of a character. Each character has six chains (S1 to S6). Deciding whether to spend your precious Tides on them is a major strategic choice.
Simple Stat Increases
Many early chains (S1, S2) provide straightforward numerical boosts, like "+15% ATK" or "+20% Skill Damage". These are reliable but can sometimes be minor. Use our calculator to see if the percentage gain is worth the cost for you!
Mechanical Transformations
The most valuable chains fundamentally change how a character plays. They might add new effects, remove limitations, or grant powerful team-wide buffs. Calcharo's S6, for example, adds a huge damage bonus and self-healing to his ultimate, transforming its impact.
The big question—"Is Jiyan's S2 worth it?"—depends on the character. This tool is designed to give you the hard data to answer that for your specific build.
A Guide to Character Stats & Attributes
Your character's power is defined by a handful of core stats. Prioritizing the right ones on your Echoes is the difference between a good build and a great one.
- ATK% / DEF%: The primary scaling stat for most damage dealers and some support units. Generally, the main stat for your 1-Cost Echo should be ATK%.
- Crit Rate & Crit Damage: Essential for all damage-focused characters. A 1:2 ratio (e.g., 70% Crit Rate, 140% Crit DMG) is the universally recommended goal for optimal average damage. These are the main stats for your 4-Cost Echo.
- Elemental DMG Bonus: A powerful stat that directly increases all damage of a specific element (Aero, Glacio, etc.). This is a must-have main stat on 3-cost Echoes for damage dealers.
- Energy Regen: Determines how quickly you can use your powerful Resonance Liberation (Ultimate). Crucial for support characters and energy-hungry carries.
Optimizing Echoes and Substats
Echoes are your primary source of customizable stats. Your "main stats" are fixed, but the 4-5 "substats" on each Echo are random. Getting good substats is the main endgame grind.
Substat Priority
For most damage dealers, the substat priority is:
Crit Rate% > Crit DMG% > ATK% > Skill/Liberation DMG% > Flat ATK. Always prioritize getting enough Crit Rate first before stacking endless Crit Damage.
What is "Crit Value" (CV)?
Crit Value is a popular community term to quickly judge an Echo's quality. The formula is (Crit Rate x 2) + Crit DMG. A CV of 40 or higher on a single Echo is considered very good to god-tier.
Building a Synergistic Team
A single powerful character is good, but a team that works together is unstoppable. Team composition revolves around Intro and Outro skills, which trigger when you swap characters after filling the Concerto Energy bar.
- Main DPS: The character who spends the most time on the field dealing damage. (e.g., Jiyan, Calcharo).
- Sub-DPS / Support: Characters who use their skills and then swap out, leaving behind powerful buffs or damage-over-time effects via their Outro Skill. (e.g., Mortefi, Sanhua).
- Healer / Buffer: A character dedicated to keeping the team alive and providing powerful team-wide buffs. The Amplify buffs provided by Verina make her the best-in-slot for this role.
A classic team structure is Main DPS + Sub-DPS + Healer. The goal is to use your supports' skills and Outros to buff your Main DPS right before they take the field to unleash their biggest attacks.
